Frequently Asked Questions

When is a dog considered a senior?

There is no single age at which every dog becomes senior. Larger breeds generally reach their senior years earlier than smaller breeds. Your dog’s breed, size, health and individual ageing process should all be considered when assessing changing nutritional needs.

When a Dog Is Considered Senior

Short answer: Usually around 7 years, but it depends on size and each individual dog is different. The American Animal Hospital Association (“AAHA”) defines senior as the last 25% of a breed’s expected lifespan.

By size (typical)

  • Small / toy (under 10 kg): ~10–12 years
  • Medium (10–25 kg): ~8–10 years
  • Large (25–45 kg): ~7–8 years
  • Giant (45 kg+): ~5–6 years

What supplements may be useful for older dogs?

Supplements for older dogs may target joint health, mobility, skin and coat condition, digestion or general nutritional wellbeing. The most appropriate option depends on the individual dog, their existing diet and any specific concerns identified by their veterinarian.

How do I choose a supplement for a senior dog?

When selecting a supplement for senior dogs, check its intended purpose, active ingredients, serving instructions and suitability for your dog. Consider existing food and supplements as well, since combining products can result in unnecessary duplication of certain nutrients or ingredients.

Are natural supplements suitable for senior dogs?

Natural supplements for senior dogs can form part of a senior care routine when appropriately formulated and used as directed. The word natural does not automatically indicate effectiveness or suitability, so ingredient quality, dosage and your dog’s individual requirements remain important.

Can senior dogs take more than one supplement?

Sometimes, but different products may contain overlapping ingredients. Before combining supplements for aging dogs, review each formulation carefully. Veterinary guidance is particularly important if your dog has an existing health condition or is taking prescription medication.

Do senior dog supplements replace a balanced diet?

No. Supplements are intended to complement appropriate everyday nutrition rather than replace it. A complete and balanced diet should remain the foundation of senior feeding, with targeted supplements added where they suit the dog’s individual nutritional requirements.
